The first chapel to be built in response to the request of Our Lady to Bernadette on 2nd March 1858 during the 13th Apparition: "Go, tell the priests to have a chapel built here". Architect: M. Hippolyte Durand (1801-1882) Work begun: 1862 Blessing and Opening: Saturday 19th May 1866 (Vigil of Pentecost) by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes with Bernadette present.
Some statistics: Capacity: 120 seats and 5 wheelchairs. The statues of St. Peter and of Pius X recall the continuity of the Church. The long entrance corridor is covered with ex-voto offerings. It is a place of silent prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. From midnight to 07h00 during the pilgrimage season from April to October.
