  The Crypt
Interior of the Crypt (photo TESO)

The first chapel to be built in response to the request of Our Lady to Bernadette on 2nd March 1858 during the 13th Apparition: "Go, tell the priests to have a chapel built here".
Architect: M. Hippolyte Durand (1801-1882)
Work begun: 1862
Blessing and Opening: Saturday 19th May 1866 (Vigil of Pentecost) by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes with Bernadette present.


Some statistics:
Capacity: 120 seats and 5 wheelchairs.
The statues of St. Peter and of Pius X recall the continuity of the Church. The long entrance corridor is covered with ex-voto offerings. It is a place of silent prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. From midnight to 07h00 during the pilgrimage season from April to October.
