Our-Lady of Graces
Other photos |
Germany has two important Marian Sanctuaries: Altötting in Bavaria and Kevelaer close to the border with Netherlands.
It has been a place of Marian Devotion since 9th century.
The Sanctuary was renamed following a miracle in 1489 when a child was saved from drowning thanks to prayers to Our Lady.
The statue is a black representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child.
Pope John-Paul II came here as a pilgrim on 18th November 1980.
The Feast of the Sanctuary is kept on 15th August.

The Virgin of the Poor

Other photos
| The Sanctuary originates from eight Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to an 11 year-old girl, Mariette Beco, from a family who rarely practised their faith. The apparitions took place between 15th January and 2nd March 1933.
The apparitions took place 75 years after those of Lourdes. One of them took place on 11th February.
The first miraculous healing took place in March 1933.
Here are some words spoken by Our Lady:
“I am the Virgin of the Poor.”
“This spring is reserved for all nations.”
“I am the Mother of the Saviour, the Mother of God, pray hard.”
“I have come to ease suffering.”
“Believe in me, I will believe in you.”
The apparitions were recognized by the bishop in 1949.
Pope John-Paul II visited the Sanctuary as a pilgrim on 21st May 1985.
The feast of the Sanctuary is kept on 15th January.

The portrait of Our Lady, Help of Christians was painted in 1814 by Leopold Layer. The artist was imprisoned during the Napoleonic Wars and vowed that if he were freed he would paint Our Lady's portrait. He attributed his rescue to Her intercession and the painting became known as Our Lady, Help of Christians. Various healings occurred at the site and Brezje became a place of pilgrimage. The portrait was crowned on September 1, 1907. Pope John Paul II visited the Shrine on May 17, 1996.
