ASSOCIATION UNDER THE FRENCH 1901 LAW OF ‘GENERAL INTEREST’

LOURDES ENVIRONNEMENT

_________________

Excerpt from the statutes:

The purpose of the association is to develop all activities of general interest aimed at studying, promoting, and preserving the flora and fauna biodiversity of the Sanctuary of Lourdes site, and more generally to carry out any activity contributing to the preservation and regeneration of the natural environment of the Sanctuary of Lourdes site within the framework of virtuous management responding to the ecological challenges raised by the adaptation of ecosystems to climate change.

Actions and projects:

The Sanctuary covers 55 hectares (136 acres), most of which are green spaces with many remarkable trees, several kilometres of banks along the Gave de Pau river that runs through the Sanctuary, and notable rock features. It is part of the Natura 2000 network (overseen by the French Office of Biodiversity).

Preserving this natural heritage involves protecting biodiversity (combating invasive species, preserving habitats for migratory fish in the Gave de Pau river, birds, and insects on the domain, planting native tree species) in addition to daily maintenance.

The Sanctuary’s hydroelectric power plant produces 50% of the domain’s electricity needs. A project aims to make the Sanctuary completely energy self-sufficient while also significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

Various educational projects and initiatives are being considered to highlight the Sanctuary’s natural heritage and to raise awareness and mobilise the public in a sustainable commitment.
