Since the time of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, the Sanctuary of Lourdes as we know it today has been built stone by stone as a result of donations from the faithful. Even today, the Sanctuary of Lourdes continues to evolve, while still preserving its historical and natural heritage. The places of worship need to be restored and the facilities for welcoming pilgrims need to be modernised.
